- Download and install Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop Edition 32 Bit.
- Install OpenSSH-Server, XRDP (RDP), Bind9
- Configure Bind9
- Configure the named.conf.local file and configure the forward and reverse DNS zones.
- Make a new directory zones
- Make a Forward and Reverse Zone files in the zones directory.
- Restart the Bind sever
- Check the DNS Configuration through dig, check for MX records and reverse lookups
- Install the following packages:
- curl fetchmail libpcre3 libgmp3c2 libexpat1 libxml2 libtie-ixhash-perl
- install sysstat
- Configure static IP on the machine
- Check Hostname on the machine, check /etc/resolv.conf, check /etc/hosts file.
- Untar the zimbra tar file to /usr/local/src.
- CD to /usr/local/src
- cd to Zimbra Directory
- Run - ./install.sh --platform-override
- Press Y to accept the agreement
- Install zimbra-ldap [Y] <-- <ENTER>
- Install zimbra-logger [Y] <-- <ENTER>
- Install zimbra-mta [Y] <-- <ENTER>
- Install zimbra-snmp [Y] <-- <ENTER>
- Install zimbra-store [Y] <-- <ENTER>
- Install zimbra-spell [Y] <-- <ENTER>
- Type Yes and press <enter> when it warns that the system will be modified.
- It will present an overview of the configuration that has been performed so far, in that list under Option 3 – Administrator Password will show as UNSET., press 3.
- It will then show a further listing under that option now it will show under option 4 that Administrator password is UNSET, press 4
- It will ask to set a password, setup a password.
- Re-type password.
- Press Enter
- Press a to accept the changes
- It will then start performing a configuration of zimbra server.
- It will show a DNS error and will ask to change the domain name with [yes] as a preset, press enter
- It will show the hostname, change it to the server name and press enter (eg: if your hostname is mail.ermin.net, then it will show the same in this option a a preset, but we need to setup a server as ermin.net, so we need to type ermin.net and press enter.
- It will then perform the remaining configuration and will start the necessary servers.
- It will ask to notify Zimbra about the installation, type No and press enter.
- It will then ask to press enter to exit once installation is complete.
- Install sysv-rc-conf utility (it is a utility similar to chkconfig)
- Check through this utility of zimbra is set to run at startup.
- Open browser and open https://mail.ermin.net:7071
- This is a secured Zimbra login page.
- Login through the admin account the with password that was setup during zimbra configuration.
- Create new users.
- Open browser and open http://mail.ermin.net
- Login through the users created and try to send and receive mails.
- Later if you wish to start or stop the zimbra server, then:
- Login to root
- su - zimbra
- zmcontrol status – to check the status of the zimbra server
- zmcontrol stop – to stop the zimbra server.
- zmcontrol start – to start the zimbra server.
- zmcontrol restart – to restart the zimbra server
